BT ADSL2+ Roll Out
This page describes the latest developments on ADSL2+ roll out by BT in the UK. In July 2011, BT announced its intention to make ADSL2+ available to 90% of the UK by Spring 2013. For example, BT’s Woolley exchange (which serves Spaldwick) will be enabled with ADSL2+ technology by May 31 2012. This is an enhancement to the original ADSL technology that is currently in use, and will provide higher speeds, particularly for those living closer to the Woolley exchange.
BT commenced its ADSL2+ roll out in early 2008
BT peformed trials of ADSL2+ in 2007, which took pace in the West Midlands. ADSL2+ was initially commercial deployed by BT in early 2008. BT originally planned to have ADSL2+ available to 5% of the UK customer base from April 2008, increasing to about 50% of UK homes and business premises by April 2009.
In March 2010, BT announced that it has deployed ADSL2+ technology to 61% of households. At this stage, BT was hoping to bring ADSL2+ to 75% of the country (some 20 million homes) by spring 2011.
ADSL2+ to be available to 80% of the UK by the end of 2011
In April 2011, BT Wholesale announced that ADSL2+ is now available from 1,017 exchanges, serving more than 15.5 million premises. BT Wholesale also announced further deployment plans for ADSL2+. It plans to make ADSL2+ available to around 80% of UK homes and businesses by the end of 2011, from a total of 1,804 exchanges.
So, in just under two years, ADSL2+ availability will have increased from 61% to 80% of UK homes and businesses.
ADSL2+ to be available to 90% of the UK by spring 2013
In July 2011, BT Wholesale announced that it planned to significantly extend the availability of Wholesale Broadband Connect to around 90 per cent of UK premises during spring 2013. The ‘up to 90%’ rollout plan is set to include more than 400 additional ‘rural’ exchanges, serving more than 900,000 ‘rural’ premises. So, ADSL2+ will be available from a total of 2,604 exchanges.
