Spaldwick musician Zoë Perkins wowed crowds at the Royal Albert Hall on the 8th August, when she performed as part of the National Youth Orchestra. Zoë, 17, from Burton Way, played the trumpet in a performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony, which was broadcast on BBC Television as part of the BBC Proms.

Zoë was selected to be one of the National Youth Orchestra’s nine trumpet players last year, after several gruelling auditions. As part of the National Youth Orchestra, Zoë has taken part in three residencies and has performed on some of Europe’s biggest stages, including the Barbican Hall, the Royal Festival Hall, the Sage Gateshead and the Royal Albert Hall. Remarking on her experience, Zoë said, “With the National Youth Orchestra, you get really big opportunities and meet very talented musicians.”

Zoe Perkins of SpaldwickFor Zoë, performing as part of the National Youth Orchestra was a culmination of years of hard work and training. The trumpet player spends three to four hours each day practising, on top of performances with other groups. Zoë is a member of the Junior Academy of the Royal Academy of Music, where she trains every Saturday. She also is the principal trumpet player in Junior Prime Brass. In 2013, Zoë gained her Grade 8 at the trumpet.

Next year, Zoë will be applying for a place at a music college, and hopes to attend the Royal Academy of Music Senior College or the Royal Northern School of Music. Her long-term aim is to have a solo career or play in an orchestra or a pit band in the West End.

If the Spaldwick musician had one message, it would be to encourage more people – young and old alike – to pick up an instrument. Zoë said, “A lot of people think you have to start at the age of four, but it is never too late.” The musician went on to explain the joys that music can bring, including helping you relax, allowing you to express yourself and giving you the joy of performing. So, it is time that the people of Spaldwick began picking up their instruments!
