The background to Melodramatics in Spaldwick

Kimbolton panto

25yrs ago, a teacher at Spaldwick School came up with the idea of staging a pantomime, with a view to raising funds for the school. So, a group of like-minded parents, teachers and governors got together and The Spaldwick Pantomime (now known as Melodramatics) was born.

The very first panto was Aladdin performed in the Spaldwick School hall on open plan staging blocks borrowed from Littlehey prison, and without a curtain. With very basic lighting, scenery was changed in the dark! Despite its limitations, a great show was put on and it was then decided to make this an annual event.  Our last performance in Spaldwick was in 2002. Due to health and safety regulations, we moved to the Mandeville Hall in Kimbolton and we became Melodramatics.

Over the years, Melodramatics has continued to grow as a drama group with the main  aim of producing good family entertainment and having fun. Membership comes from  numerous villages around the local area. Several founding  members from the Spaldwick School catchment area are still involved and taking part.

As with any organisation, it wouldn’t exist without the dedication of a huge team involved in each production. Over the years, there have been around 130 performances, with over 13,000 people seeing our shows. Hundreds of hours have been spent rehearsing, building sets and writing scripts. As a group, we have raised in the region of £28,000 for various local organisations and charities.

This year’s pantomime, Alice In Wonderland, looks set to continue in the well-established tradition of providing excellent entertainment for children and adults alike. Please support it!
