We go out of our way to protect your privacy. Spaldwick.com is an independent village website, built to share useful information and preserve local history. We want you to enjoy it without advertising, browsing surveillance or pressure to sign up. Protecting your privacy shapes how we run the site and the services we choose.
What we do not do
- We do not display advertising on Spaldwick.com.
- We do not use Google Analytics or other visitor-analytics tools to monitor your browsing.
- We do not record your browsing with session-replay tools or build advertising profiles of your interests.
- We do not sell your personal information or share your contact details for marketing.
- We do not add you to a mailing list when you email us.
- We do not require an account or social-media membership to read our public pages.
Who is responsible
Dr Mark Heath is responsible for Spaldwick.com and is its data controller: the person who decides how personal information is used for the site.
For privacy questions, corrections or requests about your information, email info@spaldwick.com. If your concern relates to a photograph, caption or article, please include its page address.
If you email us
We receive your email address, message and any name or attachments you choose to include. Messages usually concern village information, historical details, contributions or corrections. We use them to deal with the enquiry, not for marketing or unrelated purposes.
The mailbox is hosted by Rackspace. Mark reads correspondence on his phone or computer and deletes routine emails when the correspondence is finished. Provider backups may retain copies for a further period.
Sending a private email does not by itself give permission to publish the message or your contact details. If you offer a photograph, memory or other material for publication, we clarify its intended use and attribution as needed. Material accepted into the village record is handled separately from routine correspondence, as described below.
Please include only the personal information needed to explain your enquiry.
Browsing and searching
The website is hosted through Cloudways. Delivering and protecting the site involves technical information such as IP addresses, request times, requested pages and browser information. Access and error logs help diagnose faults and investigate misuse. These operational records are different from visitor-analytics tools or advertising profiles.
The main site search sends your search words to Spaldwick.com to return matching pages. Search words form part of the page request and may therefore appear in technical records. The search box in the business directory filters the entries within your browser.
We use Google Search Console reports about the site’s appearance in Google Search, alongside feedback and contributions, to understand what is useful. We do not add visitor analytics to the site for this purpose.
The noticeboard displays village information without asking for your address or device location.
Links to other websites
Photographs and video previews displayed on our pages are hosted on Spaldwick.com. Viewing a video or an external gallery means following a link to another website.
Our pages link to other websites, including YouTube, the photographic galleries at Mark Heath Photography, the Parish Council, schools and local organisations and businesses.
If you follow an external link, that website’s privacy and cookie arrangements apply. We do not control other websites or take responsibility for their privacy practices. This notice applies to Spaldwick.com.
You can still contact Mark about photographs, captions or other material he publishes in the linked photographic archive, including corrections, permissions or removal requests.
Village information, photographs and contributions
Published material may contain names, photographs, captions, memories and public contact details. It comes from contributors, photographs taken for the site, village publications, public records and other identified sources. Relevant pages and documents provide source information and attribution where practicable.
We use this material to inform readers and preserve a responsible record of village life. We take care with personal details, particularly information about children or sensitive circumstances. Accepted historical material, photographs and necessary attribution or permission records may be retained for the long term while they remain relevant to that purpose. Routine enquiries are not retained simply because the site includes an archive.
Public material may be indexed by search engines, downloaded or copied by others. We consider requests for correction or removal promptly, taking account of your rights and the circumstances. Removal from our own pages cannot guarantee removal of copies elsewhere.
Why we use information and who handles it
We rely on legitimate interests to answer enquiries, maintain accurate village information, manage appropriate contributions and keep the website secure. Those interests are providing an independent community resource and preserving local history, balanced against the rights of the people concerned.
Where a particular use relies on your consent, we explain that use when asking. You can withdraw consent by contacting us; this does not affect the lawfulness of earlier use.
Information is handled by Mark and the providers needed to operate the site and mailbox: Cloudways for website hosting and Rackspace for email. Published material is, by its nature, available to the public. Information may also be disclosed where legally required.
Our retention policy is to keep private information only while it is needed for its stated purpose. For routine enquiries, this is until the correspondence is finished. For technical records and recovery copies, it is the period needed to operate, protect and restore the service under the provider’s arrangements. Archive material and supporting attribution or permission records have a separate, longer-term purpose.
Service providers may process information outside the UK. Their processing is subject to the applicable service terms and data-protection arrangements. Rackspace describes contractual safeguards for international transfers in its customer data security and privacy information. Please contact Mark for information about the arrangements relevant to your personal information.
Your rights
Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access personal information we hold about you, correct inaccuracies, request deletion or restrict its use. Data portability applies in certain circumstances.
You have the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests. Contact us to explain your concern so that we can consider it under the applicable rules.
You can raise a concern with Mark at info@spaldwick.com. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK data-protection regulator.
Updates
We will revise this notice when relevant arrangements change and explain significant new uses of personal information where required.
